I’ve been practicing my guitar a lot lately. My music teacher Mrs. Smith says I’m a natural at music and that I could have a great career someday. That’s my dream, to be one of those artists everyone knows and talks about. To have my own albums on iTunes and everything.
Lucas is home for summer break right now. He likes to complain about staying in the tiny bedroom since I moved into his old room when he went away to college. I don’t know why he’s complaining though–I had to live in that room for 15 years! He’s only staying there for a couple of months until fall semester starts.
And he’s eating all the food in the house and leaving dishes all over the place, so Mom has to get on him about it all the time.
But Mom’s tai chi classes have picked up a lot of new students lately and so she’s been pretty busy with that.
And dad is interviewing people around town about that band, Two-Bit Karma and what they think about their music. They just got their first national record deal. I can’t wait until that’s me one day!
So with Mom and Dad being so busy these days, I had to ask Lucas to help me with my driving. I’m turning 16 in August, so I need to be ready.
But Lucas is not the person you want giving you driving lessons. He’s a terrible back seat driver. Or would that be passenger seat driver. He’s constantly yelling things like, “Watch out for that mailbox!” or “Don’t run over that can in the road!”
After an afternoon with him, I have to head out to Black Bean Coffee to relax. I love listening to the keyboardist they have playing music in the corner. Maybe soon it’ll be me over there. That would be a good job until I hit it big.
One night I ran into Adam Smith while walking home. He’s been acting all weird ever since that night at the winter festival. “Hey,” I say.
Adam jumps back. “Uh, hey.” He looks like I punched him in the stomach or something.
“You okay?” I ask.
“Yeah, uh, fine, yeah.” He stammers for a while, then takes a deep breath. “Look, I just want you to know, I’m not, you know, looking for a girlfriend.”
I laugh. “Is this about that dumb love meter?”
He looks embarrassed. “Well, yeah. I just thought you might, you know, get some ideas…about us.”
“I don’t rely on love meters to find boyfriends,” I say. “Besides, I’m too busy to think about dating someone right now.” My cousin Violet keeps telling me I’m way behind other girls, not even having had my first kiss yet, but right now I’m too focused on my music to worry much about boys.
Adam looks relieved. “Oh. Okay.” He laughs. “I guess we can just be friends then.”
I give him a thumbs up. “Friends.”
Narrated by Lucas
I’m home for summer break and honestly, it’s getting kind of boring. I guess I’m used to having so much to do at school and now I just have so much free time. Mom keeps saying I should get a job to occupy me and, well, pay for all the food I’m eating.
I’m out one of those nights I was too bored to sit at home when I met Andrea.
There was some girl nearby, taking notes and snapping pictures. I thought it was strange at first, until I realized that this wasn’t any ordinary Andrea. This was the Andrea, the actress from that vampire movie that came out earlier this year.
She told me she had just moved to Pine Hollow, looking for a small town to get away from all the paparazzi. Judging from the reporter still taking pictures, that hadn’t worked out so well.
I stammered through a few words, trying to think of something to say that wouldn’t make me sound like a dweeb. Luckily, Andrea didn’t laugh and walk away like all the girls at school do. She asked me to dance.
She was embarrassed when she stepped on my toe, but I didn’t mind. I liked her. Really, really liked her and I wasn’t going to let some stubbed toe get in the way.
That first night was certainly memorable.
Andrea and I have been seeing each other for the past month. We’ve been hanging out a lot at her house, since I’m staying with my parents, so I’m surprised one afternoon when she shows up at my house.
She looks really nervous and frightened. “What’s wrong?” I ask.
She doesn’t look at me as she says, “I’m pregnant.”
Lucas and Andrea went into the shower to woohoo on their own and Andrea ended up pregnant that night. Funny that the first time Lucas has any luck with girls gets him into more than he expected!
Do you remember the band Two-Bit Karma from previous updates? 🙂
