September 2026:
Suzie Tang is 68, Sunny Lloyd is 68
(Madison Craig is 30, Summer is 3, Skye is 5 months)
Suzie sighs as she tries to work at her next novel. She’s late getting it back to her editor and if she doesn’t turn it in soon she’ll be in breach of contract with her publisher. But her thoughts just haven’t been on writing lately.

June 2020:
George Tang and Ethan Carter are 22
(Dorothy Hernandez is 22, Mona Wiggins is 24, Suzie Tang is 61)
After they graduated from PSU, George and Ethan moved into an apartment together. It’s not the nicest neighborhood and is pretty far from almost everything except the one seedy nightclub across the street, but it’s cheap and they’re able to afford it on the few gigs the band is getting these days. (They live in the building on the right, if you’re curious.)

Charlie and Suzie Tang are 60
(Madison Craig and Bryant Smith are 23, Nathan Gates is 29)
She’s a romance writer, she reminds herself as she stares at the blank page. She knows romance. She’s had plenty of it!
But lately, the words are struggling to come out. Has she struck a romance dry spell? Is the reason she can’t find romance in her books because she can’t find much of it in her life?

“Hey,” Ethan says when he corners Dorothy in the dorm kitchen one morning. “How about you and I slip off to my room and get to know each other better?” He grins and wiggles his eyebrows up and down.

She still flirts with him, and their sex life hasn’t suffered any. But lately, George can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t right.

“Bread,” Madison murmurs as she goes over the mental checklist in her head. “Beer,” she adds. She thinks over her guest list and then adds, “Lots of beer.”

Madison Craig and Bryant Smith are 22; George Tang, Catherine Marshall, Anita Bryant, and Ethan Carter are 20

Bryant isn’t so sure he’s entirely comfortable with his roommate this semester. He couldn’t afford to rent the house on his own with Dewey moved off campus now, so he put out an ad. And Stuart McIntyre answered.

Summer 2017:
Charlie and Suzie Tang are 58
(Madison Craig and Bryant Smith are 21, George Tang and Catherine Marshall are 19)
Now that the kids are out of the house, Suzie and Charlie find that they have extra space they can use for their own purposes. So Madison’s old room becomes an office for Suzie.

“Whatcha doing?” Madison asks as she comes down the stairs.
“Reading the paper,” Anna answers.
